How Taco Tuesdays can turn into a chance to save the environment. Good news: Surprisingly small changes can make a big difference in your climate footprint — and have a positive effect on your own well-being too. It’s true that big climate actions are important. Unless society invests in transmission lines, moves from fossil fuels to renewable energy, makes buildings more energy-efficient, improves public transportation and carries out many other structural changes, we will blow past the targets of the Paris Accords. But individual and household actions are also important: In fact, they can contribute roughly25%–30% of the emissions reductions neededto avoid the worst effects of climate changeAnd they don’t have to be draconian. These are all relatively simple substitutions that don’t involve drastic lifestyle changes. A study published in October in the journal Nature Food shows that simple substitutions (chicken instead of beef in tacos, for example) can greatly decrease the carbon footprint of a typical U.S. diet while improving dietary quality. Other substitutions, such as cod instead of shrimp, or plant-based instead of dairy milk, can also reduce emissions while enhancing diets. The authors of the study found that lower-carbon foods typically have better Healthy Eating Index scores, making them good for you as well as good for the planet. It’s not just on our plates where a simple change can reduce our footprints. Changing your travel routine to avoid one car trip per day can save half a metric ton of CO2 per year. At the same time, alternative transportation like biking, walking can lead to improved fitness and decreased air pollution from automobile exaust.....read on  https://www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnbc-opinion/climate-change-lifestyle-choices-beef-carpool-rcna124449   Note from the webmaster-  Or if you fly, for vacations as so many do, limit it to once a year. Be careful using offsets, but they can be effective- use a good website to calculate your footprint, include the rental vehicle mileage or take a train, and then use the calculated amount that will have the most environmental impact. For example, donate to an NGO that installs solar arrays in third world villages- the outcome will be huge - no trees chopped down for char, no contained unhealthy smoke when cooking or for heat and AC and finally light when it's dark for reading and study!  https://www.honnoldfoundation.org/partner/ceiboalliance?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAz8GuBhCxARIsAOpzk8yqIUIdVZfX0dsdWsQX_9H2cD-rlt3Rf13MJR6paf53x867_ero3FkaAnELEALw_wcB     Completed in October 2020, the two-year pilot programme trialled innovative approaches towards supporting beneficiaries in the deprived counties of Kilifi and Garissa to take up off-grid energy solutions. Designed to integrate into the government’s pre-existing cash transfer scheme for vulnerable households, the programme provided a bi-monthly cash top-up to enable recipients to acquire solar lanterns and solar home systems. 1.4 million off-grid households in Kenya still rely on hazardous fuel-based sources for lighting such as kerosene and candles. The pilot programme studied how solar access improved living conditions and wellbeing as well as its potential for alleviating poverty and boosting income. The wellbeing of children from poor households was a special focus of the programme for UNICEF as energy access enhances their educational and health outcomes.    https://energy4impact.org/news/energy-cash-plus-initiative-%E2%80%98mwangaza-mashinani%E2%80%99-scaled-benefit-more-poor-kenyan-households
