World- the UK Example- - How Governments and Corporations are Tightly Entangled- Mapped: The Tory Network of Climate Denial and Fossil Fuel Funding. DeSmog catalogues how oil and gas firms have forged ties with the highest levels of government, the media, and influential think tanks. DeSmog Adam BarnettonJun 12, 2024 DeSmog analysed donations, registers of interests, and company accounts, drawing on years of investigative reporting and our climate disinformation database, to map the financial and institutional ties that bind this network. The investigation finds that eight members of the current Conservative government, including its environment and net zero secretaries, have received donations from fossil fuel interests or supporters of climate science denial. In total, the past three prime ministers – Rishi Sunak, Liz Truss, and Boris Johnson – have received more than £300,000 from these donors, most of it during their campaigns to become leader of the Conservative Party. DeSmog revealed last month that the Conservative Party has received £8.4 million from fossil fuel interests, highly polluting industries, and climate science deniers since the 2019 election. The Conservative Party’s ties to organised climate denial go back at least to 2009, when the late Tory peer Nigel Lawson, who was chancellor of the Exchequer under Margaret Thatcher, founded the Global Warming Policy Foundation (GWPF), the UK’s leading climate science denial group. In more recent years, climate denial has gained ground via free market think tanks opposed to government net zero targets – several of them funded by fossil fuel companies – and right-wing media outlets waging a culture war against climate action. Against this frenzied anti-climate backlash, the impacts of the climate crisis are becoming increasingly visible. The past two years were the hottest the British Isles has ever seen, with the UK experiencing temperatures of more than 40C for the first time. Jolyon Maugham, director of the Good Law Project, told DeSmog: “Abraham Lincoln spoke of government ‘of the people, by the people and for the people.’ As DeSmog and Democracy for Sale have revealed ours is of, by and for Big Oil: a tragic betrayal of the principles of democracy, and one that will follow these Cabinet ministers to their graves.

Tufton Street Ties......The GWPF is not the only climate-hostile think tank with ties to the Conservative Party. A network of libertarian think tanks based in and around 55 Tufton Street in Westminster has boasted significant access to the Conservative government over the last 14 years. Though these think tanks are characterised by a lack of funding transparency, investigations have revealed that a number of them have received funding from major fossil fuel companies, or from U.S. libertarian groups promoting climate denial......read on.
Climate Denial in the Media.......Voices attacking climate action, and casting doubt on the science behind them, have gained a significant media platform in recent years with the help of wealthy donors and Conservative politicians. The Telegraph newspaper is one of the country’s strongest media critics of climate action. A DeSmog investigation in November found that 85 percent of Telegraph opinion pieces about environmental issues over a six month period were anti-green – either attacking climate policy, questioning climate science, or ridiculing environmental groups.Three Telegraph columnists have current roles at the GWPF: Lord Frost, Matt Ridley, and Allison Pearson.......read on and for more on the Interconnectedness of all this, run your cursor over the interactive diagram at the top! https://www.desmog.com/2024/06/12/mapped-tory-network-climate-denial-fossil-fuel-funding/

What Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin and Viktor Orbán Understand About Your Brain. Why do some people who support Trump also wind up believing conspiracy theories? There’s a scientific explanation for that. 07/30/2023 MARCEL DANESI IS A PROFESSOR OF SEMIOTICS AND LINGUISTIC ANTHROPOLOGY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO. HE IS THE AUTHOR OF THE RECENT BOOK, POLITICS, LIES AND CONSPIRACY THEORIES: A COGNITIVE LINGUISTIC PERSPECTIVE. Why do people believe some politicians’ lies even when they have been proven false? And why do so many of the same people peddle conspiracy theories? Lying and conspiratorial thinking might seem to be two different problems, but they turn out to be related. I study political rhetoric and have tried to understand how populist politicians use language to develop a cult-like following, divide nations, create culture wars and instill hatred. This pattern goes back to antiquity and is seen today in leaders including former President Donald Trump, Hungary’s Viktor Orbán and Russia’s Vladimir Putin. These leaders are capable of using words and speeches to whip people into such an emotional tempest that they will do things like march on the seat of Congress or invade a neighboring country. What makes this kind of speech worrying is that it is not just emotions like aggression they can manipulate; politicians can also use rhetoric to influence the public’s thoughts and beliefs, and spread lies and conspiracy theories. Those lies and conspiracy theories are stubbornly resistant to countervailing facts and can sow divisions that destabilize their own societies. My research analyzes real speeches made by politicians past and present, including those of Trump, Orbán and Putin, using cognitive linguistics — a branch of linguistics that examines the relationship between language and the mind. What I have found is that throughout history, speeches by dictators and autocrats have one thing in common: they use dehumanizing metaphors to instill and propagate hatred of others. It is well-documented that for example words like “reptiles” and “parasites” were used by the Nazi regime to compare outsiders and minorities to animals. Strongmen throughout history have referred to targeted social groups as “rats” or “pests” or “a plague.” And it’s effective regardless of whether the people who hear this language are predisposed to jump to extreme conclusions. Once someone is tuned into these metaphors, their brain actually changes in ways that make them more likely to believe bigger lies, even conspiracy theories. These metaphors are part of a cognitive process that entraps some people in this kind of thinking while others are unaffected. Here’s how it works. The first step to manipulating the minds of the public, or really the precondition, is that listeners need to be in the right emotional state. In order to hack into the minds of the public, people need to feel fear or uncertainty. That could be caused by economic instability or pre-existing cultural prejudices, but the emotional basis is fear. The brain is designed to respond to fear in various ways, with its own in-built defense mechanisms which produce chemicals in the response pattern, such as cortisol and adrenaline. These chemical responses, which zip straight past our logical brains to our fight-or-flight reactions, are also activated by forms of language that instill fear, either directly (as in a vocal threat) or, more insidiously, by twisted facts which allay fears through lies and deceptive statements. With the rise of populist and far-right political movements in the 2010s, the use of dehumanizing metaphors to engender hatred of foreigners or of those who are different in some way has spread worldwide. The bad news is that you need that kind of disruption. Without these jarring events to bring a dose of reality, it is unlikely that people with strong convictions will ever change their minds — something that benefits the autocrat and endangers their society. .....and there's much more https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2023/07/30/the-connection-between-political-lies-and-conspiracy-theories-00108378

A green transition that leaves no one behind’: world leaders release open letter. Rishi Sunak, Joe Biden, Emmanuel Macron and other international leaders address development needs.......will they ever keep their promises? Emmanuel Macron, Mia Mottley, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Ursula von der Leyen, Charles Michel, Olaf Scholz, Fumio Kishida, William Ruto, Macky Sall, Cyril Ramaphosa, Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Rishi Sunak and Joe Biden We are urgently working to deliver more for people and the planet. Multiple, overlapping shocks have strained countries’ ability to address hunger, poverty, and inequality, build resilience and invest in their futures. Debt vulnerabilities in low- and middle-income countries present a major hurdle to their economic recovery, and to their ability to make critical long-term investments. We are urgently working to fight poverty and inequalities. An estimated 120 million people have been pushed into extreme poverty in the last three years and we are still far from achieving our United Nations sustainable development goals (SDGs) by 2030. We should thus place people at the centre of our strategy to increase human welfare everywhere on the globe.

System Failure- Is complex society on the brink of collapse?.....published in the Guardian 1-9-2018 but echoed starkly today (2-19-2024) in Trump's election rants! Is complex society on the brink of collapse? It’s a good question, but it seems too narrow. “Is Western civilisation on the brink of collapse?”, the lead article in this week’s New Scientist asks. The answer is probably. But why just Western? It’s a good question, but it seems too narrow. “Is Western civilisation on the brink of collapse?”, the lead article in this week’s New Scientist asks. The answer is probably. But why just Western? Yes, certain Western governments are engaged in a frenzy of self-destruction. In an age of phenomenal complexity and interlocking crises, the Trump administration has embarked on a mass deskilling and simplification of the state. Donald Trump might have sacked his strategist Steve Bannon, but Bannon’s professed intention, “the deconstruction of the administrative state”, remains the central – perhaps the only – policy. Defunding departments, disbanding the teams and dismissing the experts they rely on, shutting down research programmes, maligning the civil servants who remain in post, the self-hating state is ripping down the very apparatus of government. At the same time, it is destroying the public protections that defend us from disaster. A series of studies published in the past few months have started to explore the wider impact of pollutants. One, published in the British Medical Journal, suggests that the exposure of unborn children to air pollution in cities is causing “something approaching a public health catastrophe”. Pollution in the womb is now linked to low birth weight, disruption of the baby’s lung and brain development, and a series of debilitating and fatal diseases in later life. Another report, published in the Lancet, suggests that three times as many deaths are caused by pollution as by AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined. Pollution, the authors note, now “threatens the continuing survival of human societies.” A collection of articles in the journal PLOS Biology reveals that there is no reliable safety data on most of the 85,000 synthetic chemicals to which we may be exposed. While hundreds of these chemicals “contaminate the blood and urine of nearly every person tested”, and the volume of materials containing them rises every year, we have no idea what the likely impacts may be, either singly or in combination. As if in response to such findings, the Trump government has systematically destroyed the integrity of the Environmental Protection Agency, ripped up the Clean Power Plan, vitiated environmental standards for motor vehicles, reversed the ban on chlorpyrifos (a pesticide now linked to the impairment of cognitive and behavioural function in children), and rescinded a remarkable list of similar public protections. But these pathologies are not confined to “the West”. The rise of demagoguery (the pursuit of simplistic solutions to complex problems, accompanied by the dismantling of the protective state) is everywhere apparent. Environmental breakdown is accelerating worldwide.....and there's more! https://www.monbiot.com/2018/01/29/system-failure
